[call to action] US citizens: Defend Internet Neutrality *NOW*

Bookmark and Share
I received this today from the ECA. If you're a US Citizen, you need to take action to preserve your internet usage. Here's what they sent:

Now is the time for you to stand up for your rights and join millions of Americans of every political persuasion in the fight for Net Neutrality.  Net Neutrality is the principle that ensures that gamers are free to go where they want, do what they like, and connect with whom they choose online.  Congressmen Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) have introduced H.R. 3458, the Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2009.

Take action now and tell Congress to make Net Neutrality the law of the land: http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=k%2Fx98Zmeza512RWBkTZwKWlTWrC9iHzH

Without Net Neutrality, your Internet Service Provider is free to charge you extra for playing EVE-Online, to interfere with Xbox Live, or to completely shut off your ability to access for favorite web sites.  Net Neutrality affects your entire online experience.

Speak out to enshrine Net Neutrality as a principle of the internet.

This is our best chance yet in making sure that Net Neutrality is passed by Congress.  The head of the FCC supports it, the President of the United States supports it, and we're asking you to make sure to tell Congress you support it.  Take a moment to send them the message to make Net Neutrality the law.

----
The issue here is that network providers like AT&T and stinking rotten Comcast want to charge content providers and website owners for access to their 'networks.' For example, Youtube would have to pay a fee to allow videos to reach Comcast customers. Small sites like us will have no chance--we cannot afford to pay to have BattleClinic accessible to Comcast's customers, and AT&T's customers, and and and. You get the picture. This will fracture the 'net. We must act to stop the greedy providers from trying to control where we go, what we do, and what we can see on the internet.

Its more than just content providers having to pay to get their content across, you the end user will have to pay to access it or not get at it at all.

    Do you use teamspeak/skype/ventrillo?
Won't be using it anymore, as im sure your ISP will consider it competetive to thier phone services.

Do you watch youtube/hulu/<insert other content stream>?
    Do you also have cable?
Won't be viewing it anymore, as your cable company will say it competes with their core business.

    Do you play wow?
Wow uses torrents to distribute their patches, ISPs would block torrent transfers because its used by nefarious people.

    Don't believe us?

Net neutrality is so very important not just for the US, but the whole world.
Its important that people be allowed to access information, whatever its form.

there's more to it than just gamers, if net neutrality goes down, it would absolutely destroy the internet. for example, we have to 2 search engines, google and open(made up one) and an isp. lets say google pays more money to the isp then open does, the isp blocks access to open. this is one example of  how it will just become one big monopoly and soon change into a corporate television tv channel. Another example is that they could give you a "package" with only a certain amount of sites that you could go to, and any site not on that list you would have to pay 5$ to get into. the fall of net neutrality will DESTROY THE INTERNET!!! all of the little sites will just disapeer due to lack of views for the advertisments... in short, this site wouldn't even be running if net neutrality went down today.

Gentlemen, this is one step closer to a dictatorship.  We cannot let this happen.  Once they have control over what we can see and not see on the internet, as TV is already controlled by a biased media, well they will then have a monopoly on what we can see and not see.  I think that is the real plan, here, and that our ISP's are just along for the ride.

having already suffering a like situation with a cellular phone provider charging a 3.99$ a month fee for their game services then month"s after secretly and with no warning begining to charge internet service fee"s resulting in a huge bill after months of character building i was forced to stop playing and felt robbed..both finiacially and a waste of what i felt was my property namely my character..but with the fee"s being nearly a dollar an hour i had no choice..surely all who play eve understand that...and it will be snuck in with little or no warning except a massive bill ...a the choice to pay up or give up..but pay you certainly will..or lose what i consider your property..aka..your character and all your time will be for not..this is a important 1 people... being snuck in with nothing in the press or news reports and it amounts to millions of dollars for sure

There are signs that the current American administration is supporting Net Neutrality. Don't stop now! Talk to your congressional representative and make sure they back the FCC's plans!

Problem is most people have this weird mindset that thinks things like this or things at all just don't happen. My dad for one and other friends of mine all think like this and its scary. Things do happen and when there is a way to make an extra dollar, they really happen. It took me two minutes to send this to my representative, I can only hope they still represent me and not money bag business.

Whom ever decides to go against the freedom will loose their  buisness overnight.
Other buisness would just keep things as they are and there advert would be basically ... " Why pay More .. Why PAy at ALL ? ".
They get every customer , nothing changes , they get more advertisment revenue!

So its not stop them to save our internet freedom ... it should be .. stop them becuase they are going to go out of buisness !

After reading both sides of the issue, NN seems more about who gets stuck with the bill and how much do we allow the government to be big brother. Honestlt all sides are right. If i was TW, comcast, AT&T, etc., I would want to charge content providers that suck up all my bandwidth to better manage is delivery and profit margins. I truely don't believe they'd foolishly charge little fees to consumers, we would move to ISPs that don't. On the other hand , yes I don't want me games slowed down either or charged crazy fees for access; blocked access, etc.

A balance of both is needed. Companies built the internet, not the govt, not the noob on Xbox, for profit. Nothing in life is free. But honestly do you think google and MS are looking out for you for backing NN? they're looking out for their bottom line too. As long as the Govt doesn't get in to deep and we let free markets work with customer protection. I'll be happy.

Not sure you really are getting the point here...  YOU pay for the bandwidth in your monthly bill to your ISP.  That gets you however many GB of transfer across their network.  It shouldn't matter if you're gaming, watching YouTube, or whatever, that bandwidth is YOURS.  What they want to do is charge more for some types of use, which has nothing to do with network costs, just money grabbing.  Lets face it, they already charge you enough a month to cover costs and make a profit, or they would be out of business.

Internet is often compared to electricity, and this would be akin to the power company saying you can use lights and radios, but you pay more for TV and computers.  You pay for the power, it should really be your choice what you plug in.

Companies built the internet, not the govt

    Actually...
