Boom Stick - Maelstrom
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:47:40 am »
"Listen up you primitive screwheads!  This is my BOOM STICK!" - Ash, Army of Darkness

I've long derided the maelstrom as being a useless ship.  However, I no longer agree with my previous assessment after trying this autocannon setup.

In short, this setup is designed to frontload massive quantities of damage while still tanking quite well.  I didn't think I'd end up with much more DPS than I get from my 2-gyro tempest due to the lack of a ship bonus to projectile damage, but I was wrong.

With battleship 4, large autocannon spec 3, surgical strike 4, and rapid firing 5, this setup gives 650 DPS with barrage L and an amazing 829 DPS with hail L.  Please note that this is from guns alone.  If you switch out the web drones for four tech II heavy drones, you'll get another 200 or so DPS (IIRC), pushing your DPS max over 1000!

Needless to say, this shocked me.  I've been used to flying Matari ships whose DPS in comparison to Gallente and Amarr...well...sucked.  I've felt a lot better about having chosen Minmatar as my second race to fly since I discovered this, and I can't wait until Minmatar BS 5 finishes tonight so I can see how much DPS this beast puts out with that addition.

Notes:  Due to the three tracking rigs, this setup's tracking doesn't entirely suck despite mounting the heaviest autocannons possible.  As a result, if you're fighting battleships and battlecruisers, it's actually viable to use combat drones instead of web drones, and in a gang with other people to web, this setup becomes even more uber.

UPDATE: BS 5 just finished, so with that, rapid firing 5, large auto spec 3, and surgical strike 4, I get 696 DPS with barrage L and 887 with hail L.

UPDATE #2:  Finished large auto spec 4 a while back and forgot to post updated DPS numbers.  903 from guns with hail, and 710 with barrage.

I found that my DPS went from 783 to 829 with hail L with the fourth gyro, so to me it was worth it.  I toyed with the idea of fitting a damage control, instead, but decided I liked actually having a ship with uber damage output more.

EDIT:  It is worth noting that the more base DPS you have, the more the absolute effect of a damage mod.  The fourth damage mod adds 5% to damage per second,  so on a ship with 200 DPS it would add 10 DPS, whereas on a ship with 800 DPS it adds 40.

Aye, and another really nice thing damage related is the ROF rig - they don't stack with gyrostabs :D

I wonder how high your damage would be if you had 3 of those on - for curiosity's sake.

Actually, last time I tested, the RoF rig *did* stack with gyros. :(  Have you done any testing with this?  I'd love to be proven wrong. :)

Moreover, the RoF rigs take 200 calibration each for the tech 1 version, meaning you could fit two, max, and no third rig since you'd be out of calibration.  :P

I would guess the range is "up close and personal" (or less than 15km - most likely under 10)

Very nice setup there and I'm always glad to see people my Minmatar ship roar with they power that cause people the quake and tremble in fear. Some day I might even  have enough isk to try this one out. . . it isn't all the expensive a set up (though the skills you put into her WILL take many pilots along time to reach) but I'm young and poor. :)

Anyway - THANKS for sharing this one. . . it is my new favorite for the Maelstrom.

I *would* swap out the fourth gyro for a DC, but otherwise, that's a tasty setup. :D

Nice setup, that's gonna hurt alot, and it looks like it could hold up tanked quite good as well, It might be an idea like other people have said as well to swap out that 4th gyro for a DC, that extra bit of DPS could easily be sacrificed for the increased survivability that the DC gives, which gives you a longer time to stay alive and pound the crap into other ships :D
