"Listen up you primitive screwheads! This is my BOOM STICK!" - Ash, Army of Darkness
I've long derided the maelstrom as being a useless ship. However, I no longer agree with my previous assessment after trying this autocannon setup.
In short, this setup is designed to frontload massive quantities of damage while still tanking quite well. I didn't think I'd end up with much more DPS than I get from my 2-gyro tempest due to the lack of a ship bonus to projectile damage, but I was wrong.
With battleship 4, large autocannon spec 3, surgical strike 4, and rapid firing 5, this setup gives 650 DPS with barrage L and an amazing 829 DPS with hail L. Please note that this is from guns alone. If you switch out the web drones for four tech II heavy drones, you'll get another 200 or so DPS (IIRC), pushing your DPS max over 1000!
Needless to say, this shocked me. I've been used to flying Matari ships whose DPS in comparison to Gallente and Amarr...well...sucked. I've felt a lot better about having chosen Minmatar as my second race to fly since I discovered this, and I can't wait until Minmatar BS 5 finishes tonight so I can see how much DPS this beast puts out with that addition.
Notes: Due to the three tracking rigs, this setup's tracking doesn't entirely suck despite mounting the heaviest autocannons possible. As a result, if you're fighting battleships and battlecruisers, it's actually viable to use combat drones instead of web drones, and in a gang with other people to web, this setup becomes even more uber.
UPDATE: BS 5 just finished, so with that, rapid firing 5, large auto spec 3, and surgical strike 4, I get 696 DPS with barrage L and 887 with hail L.
UPDATE #2: Finished large auto spec 4 a while back and forgot to post updated DPS numbers. 903 from guns with hail, and 710 with barrage.
