Description:	Lightning Priority Courier ------------------------- The Lightning seems exceptionally well-armed for a ship of its size. This is no ordinary merchant vessel - though, with its crew of only 23, it is also a paltry excuse for a pirate vessel. The Lightning is a courier, a light, fast ship intended to carry small valuable cargoes, blasting out of its path any opposition it cannot outrun. Though it bears a superficial resemblance to many similar vessels of the Orions, the Lightning is more recent than the Wanderer. Designed to pour its heart out in speed, this ship has shields so paltry and a hull so strong that it makes no difference whether the shields are up or not. Many Orion captains put their trust in speed and live to tell how both dorsals were holed and still they got away. Description:	OUTALANCE SHIPYARDS MCAF-1 Gnat Fighter Owner : The Morgan Corporate Authority ------------ As the Dominion War started, The Morgan Corporate Authority (MCA) found its mission changed. Section 31 wanted the colony to go into a more active role of interdiction of solitary enemy ships trying to penetrate Federation space from the Badlands sector. As ships were built or confiscated for the task a pressing need for a front line fighter was discovered. The Gnat fighter was developed from a plan to convert the MCA's fleet of MU-1b Bumblebee work utility vehicles into a front line fighter. The Bumblebee was considered the bastard sibling of the standard Federation Workbee. The MCA's prime source of income was from mining and processing precious ores and gases. Most of these materials came from the gas giants that circled the MCA's home sun or the Badlands itself. The Bumblebee was designed to tackle these environments. The Bumblebee was an aerodynamic, one-man ship. It was capable of orbital operations as well as atmospheric. Its hull was made of thick titanium alloys and a two inch thick transparent aluminum windscreen. It's stubby wings and V-tail supplemented its impulse and anti-gravity repulsion units. The Bumblebee was capable of diving into a Jovian style atmosphere or the turbulent regions of the Badlands Nebula and withstanding up to 10 atmospheres of pressure. This made it outstanding as a atmospheric sampler or rescue vehicle as its massive rear impulse engine was designed to taxi larger ships by either using its own power or by tapping into its host's fuel supply. The ships' over-powered state, maneuverability, and very rugged construction made it a logical choice for fighter conversion. Three quarters of the Bumblebee fleet was converted into what was to be called the MCAF-1 Gnat. The bee's air breathers were emptied of its sampling and sensor gear and from the unused air scoops a quad pulse Phase/disrupt system installed. The lower stabilizer fins were strengthened and then outfitted with a Morgan EW-1 "Use and Discard" Warp drive (it was called this because its fuel and dylithium crystal system were contained in a sealed unit. This could be quickly replaced for refueling or maintenance without grounding the vessel). The converted Gnats were divided among the home colony and the X fleet. It enjoyed great success in its fighter role its thick skin and hostile environment/friendly abilities gave it a great advantage over its main opponent, the Dominion fighter, which was larger, slower, and incapable of operating where the Gnat could. On the negative side, the Gnat's armament was useless against capital ships, even with its warp drive it's range was limited and so it had to stay close to its host base or vessel. It was also extremely uncomfortable being only about 20 feet long; the fighter conversion made its cramped cockpit all the more so. Few pilots could fly it with out quickly becoming fatigued. Oddly enough, the Klingons who were with the MCA liked it. They considered it a "warrior's fighter". Like a B'aleth , if handled properly it was deadly. The Gnat shown here was one assigned to the ISS Belladonna, an X-Class cruiser. As typical, markings are kept to a minimum or none at all.
